Since the release of Valence 2.1 a few weeks ago I've talked with many new developers who have said they were surprised to find that the Valence framework includes a really robust portal that controls login, session control, navigation and user access. They are even more surprised to find that the Valence Portal is totally free.
Based on this feedback it's clear that we're not talking up the Valence Portal enough in our advertising and web materials, so we'll be adjusting that in the coming weeks. Many developers are also a bit confused as to whether or not they need a Community or Professional Developer license to deploy the portal to end users.
The Community vs Professional Developer licensing rules apply only to applications that you develop with Valence. Since the Valence Portal is an included part of the framework you can use its functionality without charge or the need to share code. For example, if you have some web programs developed in another tool and some other links that you want to use through the Valence portal you can set those up and deploy to end users without the need to share code or upgrade to the Professional Developer license. However, you still need to follow the licensing rules for any applications that you create with Valence and deploy within the portal.
Feel free to post comments and questions regarding this and I'll be glad to answer.
